NVMe stands for Non-Volatile Memory express. It is a communications interface/protocol developed for Solid State Drives (SSDs). Prior to this, Solid State drives used hard drive controller interfaces (SATA) which was designed for spinning hard disk drives. NVMe standardizes the interface for SSDs requiring only 1 driver for all drives using this specification. The M.2 form factor, is a small, compact design suitable for modern laptops and desktops.
